After seven years of development, Fallout: New California--a free mod for the PC version of Fallout: New Vegas--has released. The mod is single-player experience and acts as an unofficial bridge in the Fallout timeline. Amusingly, New California released the same day as the first Fallout 76 beta, offering a more traditional Fallout experience for those disappointed with the series' new multiplayer-focused direction.
In New California, you play as an orphan who was raised in the San Bernardino Mountains by the survivors of Vault 18. The story picks up 20 years after Fallout 2, when people are still recovering from the aftermath of the New California Republic-Enclave War. As you play, you'll take part in plot lines that ultimately inspire the events of Fallout 3 and New Vegas. If you have the right mods installed, your story in Fallout: New California can seamlessly transition into New Vegas as part of the same long save.
New California's entire campaign can be beaten in six to eight hours, but there's anywhere between 15 and 30 hours of content in each playthrough depending on what you choose to do. The mod has 13 possible endings as well, which are earned depending on the choices you make. Although it's a mod of New Vegas, New California acts as its own separate game. It has its own map--which is about two-thirds the size of the one in New Vegas--and nearly 17,000 lines of spoken dialogue that are all unique to the mod.
To play New California, you'll need the PC version of New Vegas. You don't need the Ultimate edition of the game or its DLC, but it will have to be updated with the latest patches. Make sure you have a mod manager downloaded to your PC as well. The folks behind New California recommend Nexus Vortex or Mod Organizer 2. After that, you just need to download New California from the mod's ModDB page, open your mod manager, follow the on-screen prompts, and you're good to go.

New California--built from the bones of an older mod called Brazil-- is set in between the events of Fallout 2 and Fallout New Vegas, and to simply call it a “mod” is to sell it short. This is practically a brand new, fan-made Fallout game, that’s even got voice acting and takes place on a new map, with the game set in the Black Bear Mountain National Forest in California.
Its release is timed well; Fallout 76 is out soon, and anyone disappointed that it’s a multiplayer affair, and not the traditional epic singleplayer RPG, can just try this out instead.
You can download the mod here. As for how good it is, Nathan is playing it right now, and will have some impressions up on Kotaku soon!

UPDATE: This post’s headline earlier referred to the mod being nine years old. It’s actually been in active development since 2012.
Every Fallout player has thought the same thing at one time or another: what would co-op be like in Fallout 3, or New Vegas? Now thanks to the magic of mods, co-op multiplayer is possible in the Mojave Wasteland.
A modder by the name of nvm_corporal has helped create NV: Multiplayer, the first-ever co-op mod for Fallout: New Vegas that lets gamers team up with friends to explore and quest together. The way FV: Multiplayer works is that one player hosts an online session that others join, and the host's game--inventory, quests, etc--is constantly synchronized with everyone else's. The project is by no means finished or complete, but you can find more info at this Reddit thread, or this FAQ page.
'The way it works currently is that quests are clientside, they still take place in the world but one player in a location will synchronise entities/NPCs to other players around them. This means that if you entered an area where a quest NPC should be, and someone has previously killed them in the cell (whilst someone is currently in it with you), then you will fail the quest on entry.'
Due to the extremely ambitious nature of the mod, the team had to push New Vegas' Gamebryo engine to its limits. NV:MP currently has 91,041 lines of C++ code, and despite all the work that's gone into the mod so far, it'll always be free.
Sadly NV:MP doesn't support dedicated servers, and likely won't when it's released, but the team is interested in realms and large servers to power the online multiplayer. PVP may be included, but the post didn't make any mention of player-vs-player action.
The devs plan on holding a huge beta test in two weeks, so if you're interested in helping test New Vegas: Multiplayer, be sure to sign up on the game's homepage.
